ETM+ Night Lights

With this new image still active as the current image. Press "Ctrl A" on the keyboard to select the entire image.

Press "Ctrl C" on the keyboard to copy the entire selection to the clipboard. i.e. the entire image.

Switch to the other image where you have previously pasted the other night lights version of the same image.

Press "Ctrl V" on the keyboard to paste the entire selection as a new layer in the new night lights image.

Right click on the layer name you just pasted into this image in the floating "Layers" tool window.

Navigate the popup window the "Blending Options".

Adjust the slider at the bottom of the popup dialog box labeled "Underlying Layer:" to a value of "55" as shown in the image below.

You will see the yellow begin to poke through forming a new city lights image. This will be our final product. Note that Cuba doesn't have big cities like LA or New York. The rural communities you see in the image below will be good enough for this tile.

Click on the circle with the arrow pointing to the right in the floating "Layers" tool window.

Navigate the popup menu to "Flatten Image".

Note in the image below that the layers are now compressed to just one layer in the floating "Layers" tool window.

Navigate the menu control "File-Save As...".

Browse your hard drive again to the location you are saving these tiles.

Give the new file the appropriate "Path###Row###" designation and add the tag "NightLights" to the end of the file name.

Make sure and set the format to ".bmp".

Click the "Save" button.

Double check the "File Format" is set to "Windows" and "Depth" is set to "24 bit".

Click the "OK" button.

Below you can see a full resolution of the final night lights image. I have compressed it to .jpg for web distribution.
