We begin this exercise by reviewing what this tutorial will cover. There are three main steps.

The ultimate goal here is to end up with something like this:
Click on the image for a larger view.
The brighter the color, the higher the mountains. The black areas are at sea level, meaning zero elevation. Notice there is no white noise or static in the picture. This is because you will have taken the time to remove it like I did, as demonstrated in this tutorial.
You may be asking now, what is SRTM, and how was this data created in the first place?
Answer: SRTM = Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, or Shuttle Radar Topography Map
Now again you may ask, why are we processing it, when the finished data is available directly from the USGS.
Correct, but it costs $$$, about $60 per tile, with 13 tiles.
$60 * 13 = $780.
Do you have $780 sitting around? Cause I don't, not right now.
I might later when I actually get a job. In which case I am willing to buy all of them, and we won't have to do any more work, at least on the SRTM.
I'll let you know when I do.
In the mean time there is some processing that we can do. So click on the links above and get to it. <grin>
